Bridget here. Today I want to talk about the biggest piece of advice I wish someone had given me a long time ago. Listen closely because I’m going to give it to you. Network and keep in touch with the contacts you make. You never know who might be able to help you get your foot into the door of your next opportunity. Let me tell you a short story. When I was in college, I met with news directors at several stations. They would come to campus and talk to eager students with stars in their eyes. I met with them year after year, and finally when it was time for me to enter the workforce, one of them remembered me and brought me in for an interview. I nailed it, and he offered me the job. I ended up accepting another opportunity. Let me tell you what I did well and not so well with that first offer. I did a great job networking, but I didn’t follow through. I did not keep in touch with that news director. My point is this – you never know when an opportunity is going to present itself—having a connection with someone on the inside could give you a leg up on the competition … or you could be that connection for someone else trying to make it.
